The Graduate Center of DIW Berlin is accepting applications for its PhD program in applied economics with focus areas that include terrorism, insecurity, conflict, and poverty. A degree can be awarded in collaboration with the Humboldt University in Berlin. There are no tuition fees, and successful applicants will be awarded with a scholarship for living costs in the first year. In the second and third years, students have the opportunity to join the research staff at DIW Berlin and apply their knowledge and skills to international projects in various areas of development economics.

The deadline for applications is April 15, 2009.

University of Cologne Offers Scholarships for its Doctoral Program 2009

The Cologne Graduate School in Management, Economics, and Social Sciences (CGS) of the WiSo-Faculty offers a three-year doctoral program to outstanding students holding a Master’s degree (or German Diploma or equivalent) in Management, Economics and Social Sciences.

About the Program:
The course program will start in October 2009. During the first year, students will take part in courses on multidisciplinary methods and theories and subject-specific courses. During the second and third year, students mainly conduct research and work on their thesis. Students are encouraged to spend one term abroad.

Qualifications:
The CGS is looking for excellent students who are close to finishing their Master’s degree (or German Diploma or equivalent) and who count among the top 10% of graduates in their faculty. The teaching language of the program is English.

The Graduate School of the John F. Kennedy-Institute for North American Studies invites applications for the academic year 2009/2010. Six academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences collaborate in offering a structured curriculum. The doctoral program is interdisciplinary in its approach and focuses on those social transformations impacting the United States and Canada at the beginning of the 21st century. Areas of emphasis include domestic and foreign policy, economic development, ethnic identity and relations, as well as recent transformations in media, art, literature, culture, and religion.

Applicants interested in pursuing a doctorate with an emphasis in North American Studies must have a completed degree (M.A. or the equivalent) with above average marks in one of the following disciplines: American Cultural Studies, American Literature, History, Political Science, Sociology and Economics.

Grants are awarded for a period of one year with the possibility of two annual extensions. The language of instruction is English.

Scholarships amount to ca. 1.500 € per month.

The German translation of Darwin's The Origin of Species appeared in 1860, just months after the original, thanks to Heinrich Georg Bronn, a distinguished German paleontologist whose work in some ways paralleled Darwin's.The International Helmholtz Research School “Biophysics and Soft Matter” (BioSoft) offers positions for graduate students in Biology, Physics, or Chemistry (leading to a Ph.D. within 3 years) who will be employed at the Research Centre Juelich or at one of the cooperating universities in Koeln and Duesseldorf. The research school provides an intense training in Biophysics and Soft Matter, as well as soft skills. A comprehensive framework of experimental and theoretical tools that will enable Ph.D. students to gain deeper understanding into the structure, dynamics, and function of complex systems, in particular those related to living systems. The scholarships available for its master’s programs in computer science and information and communication technology.
