The Brothers Bloom The Brothers Bloom are the best con men in the world, swindling millionaires with complex scenarios of lust and intrigue. Now they’ve decided to take on one last job – showing a beautiful and eccentric heiress the time of her life with a romantic adventure that takes them around the world.

Bloom is writer-director Rian Johnson’s follow up to Brick, one of the most-debated films within IMDb circles (just so you know). What gets us excited here is: the casting of Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) as the brothers’ accomplice; knowing that filming occurred all over Europe and Asia; anticipating Johnson’s crafted dialogue and his second attempt at fooling his audience. But what bums us out? The studio’s hide and seek release strategy, which once positioned the film for late 2008, then really late 2008, then spring 09, and now early summer …

Rated PG-13 for violence, some sensuality and brief strong language.

Director: Rian Johnson
Stars: Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo
Studio: Summit Entertainment
Release Date: 29 May 2009 (USA)
Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Crime, Drama, Romance

Management Management chronicles the chance meeting of Mike Cranshaw (Zahn) and Sue Claussen (Aniston) when she checks into the roadside motel owned by Mike’s parents in Arizona. A bottle of wine ‘compliments of management’ jump starts the cross-country journey and unique courtship between two different kinds of people who are both ultimately looking for the same thing – a sense of happiness. Mike sees something special in button downed Sue that inspires him to take a chance and hit the road to go after her. But once he reaches Maryland, he finds that Sue has no place for an aimless dreamer in her carefully ordered life. Obsessed with making a difference in the world, Sue falls back in with her punk-turned-Yogurt mogul ex-boyfriend Jango (Harrelson), who promises her a chance to head his charity operations. But having finally found something worth fighting for, Mike puts his hops against her practicality, and the two embark on a twisted, bumpy, ultimately freeing journey to discover that their place in the world just might be together.

Playwright-turned-filmmaker Stephen Belber (he adapted his work Tape for Richard Linklater) looks to register a fall hit with his first movie, a comedy that will appeal to Aniston fans who like her best in offbeat roles. Paired with Zahn, it’s almost like Rachel is winding the clock back to when she hung out with Ron Livingston and Jake Gyllenhaal. But will Josh Lucas (of all people) steal the show as a porn star who gives his buddy Zahn some advice?

Rated R for language.

Director: Stephen Belber
Stars: Jennifer Aniston, Steve Zahn, Woody Harrelson
Studio: Image Entertainment
Release Date: 15 May 2009 (USA)
Genre: Comedy, Romance

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past A bachelor is haunted by the ghosts of his past girlfriends at his younger brother’s wedding.

You might remember this one from circa 2003, when a post-Gigli Ben Affleck backed away from starring in another romantic comedy. So, yeah, I guess it’s somewhat ironic that Jennifer Garner wound up cast in the project years later, and I have to imagine (without digging up a copy of the script) that her character, the sister of the bride, winds up domesticating the wild McConaughey here. That’s what has to happen according to the genre’s rules, right? But I feel like that is going against what makes McConaughey sexy: we want him untamed, roaming, and only capable of lust. Cross my heart and hope that Mark Waters (who here reunites with one-time mean girl Lacey Chabert!) has a way to keep his star’s desirable qualities intact.

Rated PG-13 for sexual content throughout, some language and a drug reference.

Director: Mark Waters
Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Emma Stone
Studio: New Line Cinema
Release Date: 1 May 2009 (USA)
Genre: Comedy, Romance

Gigantic - Movie Review and Synopsis

Gigantic Mattress salesman Brian Weathersby (Dano) finds his plan to adopt a Chinese baby augmented by the arrival of a young woman, Happy (Deschanel), who comes into his workplaces, falls asleep on one of the beds, and starts to affect his life upon waking up.

“Wait, why haven’t I heard about this movie?” If you are asking yourself this question, which I was about six weeks before its release, perhaps you’ll want to read this review from Gigantic’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival last year. Still, despite the number of so-so reviews, most people indicate the story picks up speed in its second act, and the chemistry between Dano (who also produces here) and Deschanel is undeniable — though perhaps Zooey might want to pick up on the fact that she’s becoming known as “the It Girl who can save a bad film”? Not to be a jerk, but I think it’s a bit shady to release this film right before the better-received (500) Days of Summer.

Rated R for language, some sexual content and violence.

Director: Matt Aselton
Stars: Paul Dano, Zooey Deschanel, John Goodman
Studio: First Independent Pictures
Release Date: 26 June 2009 (UK)
Genre: Comedy, Romance

I Love You, Man - Movie Review and Synopsis

I Love You, Man In I Love You, Man, a comedy from John Hamburg (Along Came Polly, co-writer of Meet The Parents, Meet The Fockers, Zoolander), Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd, Knocked Up The 40 Year Old Virgin) is a successful real estate agent who, upon getting engaged to the woman of his dreams, Zooey, (The Offices Rashida Jones), discovers, to his dismay and chagrin, that he has no male friend close enough to serve as his Best Man. Peter immediately sets out to rectify the situation, embarking on a series of bizarre and awkward man-dates, before meeting Sydney Fife (Jason Segel, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), a charming, opinionated man with whom he instantly bonds. But the closer the two men get, the more Peters relationship with Zooey suffers, ultimately forcing him to choose between his fiancée and his new found bro, in a story that comically explores what it truly means to be a friend.

Aww, cute, the notion of bro-mance goes truly mainstream here, instead of being relegated to reality shows and whatnot. Even better, writer-director John Hamburg finally returns to the big screen after going mainstream with Along Came Polly back in 2004. Without knowing the full score, we’ll credit Hamburg’s indie sensibilities with landing Rashida Jones from The Office in the role of Rudd’s fiance and slotting Jamie Pressly as her BFF (and not the other way around). Jason Segel breaks away from Judd Apatow’s clutches for a role that should make him look way less desperate, in a movie that will undoubtedly have better-realized female characters.

Rated R for pervasive language, including crude and sexual references.

Director: John Hamburg
Stars: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones
Studio: DreamWorks SKG
