The Girlfriend Experience GFE is five days in the life of an ultra high-end Manhattan call girl who thinks she has her life totally under control. She feels her future is secure because she runs her own business her own way, makes $2000 an hour, and has a devoted boyfriend who accepts her lifestyle. But when youre in the business of meeting people, you never know who youre going to meet

Uh-oh, Steven Soderbergh is experimenting in the digital realm again. But don’t fret, girlfriend, because real-life pornographer and ingénue Sasha Grey should bring enough presence to keep you riveted if S.S.’s penchant for improvised dialogue and consciously half-formed ideas about our current economic situation aren’t your bag. Bloggers (sigh) have praised both Grey’s performance and Soderbergh’s visual take on five days in the life of this particular working woman.

Rated R for sexual content, nudity and language. (also VOD edition)

Director: Steven Soderbergh
Stars: Sasha Grey, Chris Santos
Studio: Magnolia Pictures
Release Date: 15 July 2009 (France)

Outrage Kirby Dick focuses his camera on closeted politicians who lobby for anti-gay legislation in the U.S.

Linking you all to Out’s interview with Kirby Dick feels appropriate since, once upon a time — before the aforementioned mag looked and smelled like the men’s department at Barney’s, it used to engage in the practice of publishing the names of closeted men and women of influence. Consider rallying your friends and allies, think about how rad it would be if Act Up and the Mattachine Society were still active, and realize there are handfuls of people like former U.S. Senator Larry Craig who live horrible lives and actively oppress people of their own kind around the world.

Mutant Chronicles At the end of the Ice Age, The Machine came from the outer space with the purpose to change men into mutants. However, a hero defeated the device and a great seal was laid over The Machine. In 2707, the depleted world is ruled by four Corporations: Mishima, Bauhaus, Capitol and Imperial that are in constant war. During a battle between Capitol and Bauhaus, the great seal is broken and The Machine works again transforming soldiers and civilians in hordes of mutants. A small part of the population escapes to Mars, leaving millions of people behind. The man of faith and leader of an ancient brotherhood Brother Samuel is a believer of God and the Chronicles, a bible about the mutants. With the city under siege of the mutants, he visits the Corporations’ leader Constantine asking for an aircraft and twenty men for a suicide mission to destroy The Machine, planting a bomb and a detonator following the knowledge of the Chronicles. He recruits the tough Major ‘Mitch’ Hunter; the Bauhaus Lieutenant Maximillian von Steiner; the keeper of the Chronicles Severian that is under a vow of silence; the gorgeous and lethal Corporal Valerie Duval; Corporal Juba Kim Wu; Captain John McGuire; and Corporal Jesus ‘El Jesus’ de Barrera. Together they become the last hope of Earth against the evil mutants.

Maybe all the people who hated the Mutant Chronicles cut which screened at Comic-Con and elsewhere last year will regroup for version two; Magnolia Pictures provided director Simon Hunter with the resources to tinker with his film for this limited release (note that the VOD premiere occurs/occurred one month prior to the theatrical bow). Will this engage the critics? No way, but perhaps more fans will get behind the revamped picture, and allow this entire universe to live on either in DVD sequels, webisodes, what have you. It’s the kind of prospect that serves as a custom fit for the industry-savvy Thomas Jane, who perhaps should create his own distribution company?

Rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout.

Director: Simon Hunter
Stars: Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki
Studio: Magnolia Pictures
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

The Great Buck Howard - Movie Review and Synopsis

The Great Buck Howard When a law school dropout answers an advertisement to be a personal assistant he unknowingly signs on to work for a belligerent has-been magician struggling to resurrect his career. This leads to a journey across the country staging the comeback of a lifetime.

“The Great Buck Howard might be the most affectionate look back at old-school entertainment since Peter O’Toole boozed his way through My Favorite Year.” With a quote like that, I’m wondering if GBH will gather positive word-of-mouth as we enter spring.

Rated PG for some language including suggestive remarks, and a drug reference.

Director: Sean McGinly
Stars: Colin Hanks, John Malkovich, Tom Hanks
Studio: Magnolia Pictures
