Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian When the Museum of Natural History is closed for upgrades and renovations, the museum pieces are moved into federal storage at the famous Washington Museums. The centerpiece of the film will be bringing to life the Smithsonian Institution, which houses the world’s largest museum complex with more than 136 million items in its collections, ranging from the plane Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams) flew on her non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic and Al Capone’s (Jon Bernthal) rap sheet and mug shot to Dorothy’s ruby slippers, Fonzie’s jacket from Happy Days, the still from M*A*S*H and Archie Bunker’s lounge chair from All in the Family. With a forwarded resume, Larry (Ben Stiller) becomes another caretaker at the Smithsonian, where Kahmunrah, an evil Pharaoh will come to life with the reestablishing of a tablet as a magical force in the museum bringing the old exhibits (Such as Theodore Roosevelt and Dexter) and new exhibits (like General Custer and Al Capone) back to life, and in conflict with each other. Larry enlists the help of Amelia Earheart, who he develops a romantic interest in, and together they try to put everything back in order.

Similar ideas abound for this sequel, but even naysayers might admit that a better cast has been assembled around Ben Stiller for his second Washington, D.C. adventure. (It’s pretty amazing that Stiller has three active franchises going, if you believe reports that Little Fockers is getting made). Here’s a first look at the film, and a glimpse at how much Stiller has aged over the past couple years. P.S. Is it just me, or does Amy Adams seem kind of annoying as Amelia Earhart? Granted, she’s probably way less irritating than Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt, who returns for the sequel (along with two handfuls of new faces), but pinched and snippy just aren’t her colors.

Rated PG for mild action and brief language.

Dance Flick Street dancer Thomas Uncles is from the wrong side of the tracks, but his bond with the beautiful Megan White might help the duo realize their dreams as the enter in the mother of all dance battles.

Little is known about the new Wayans Bros. comedy, but if that plot outline holds true, the brothers could be retreating back to White Chicks territory in order to put the uninspired Little Man behind them. (Remember when the “baby” hit his adoptive father with a frying pan?) I’m probably in the minority here, but I truly wish Keenen Ivory Wayans would get in more of a 90s mindset, when he wrote scripts like I’m Gonna Git You Sucka and Hollywood Shuffle. If that can’t happen, strive to create scenarios that as are funny as the best bits from the first two Scary Movies.

Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content throughout, and language.

Director: Damien Wayans
Stars: Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans
Studio: Paramount Pictures

Star Trek From the first scene the Star Trek universe as we knew it has changed forever. Kirk is now an angry wayward young man looking for trouble. A young Spock is tortured over his mixed heritage, the emotions he fights to control and the very different paths he has before him. He must choose between the Vulcan world which will never accept him as anything other than ‘half human’ and Starfleet Academy, worlds away from everything he has ever known. We meet Dr ‘Bones’ McCoy and a young linguist Uhura at the Academy and watch as a headstrong Kirk wreaks havoc on Starfleet’s rules and regulations. The fleet is called to arms as peril aims at the heart of the Federation and Kirk and Spock are irrevocably pulled together to save the galaxy – for the first time.

One look (okay maybe two) at the trailer and it’s safe to say this isn’t your grandfather’s Star Trek. With a Spock vs. Kirk fist fight, steamy sex scenes, Shaun of the Dead cracking jokes and is that Harold from Harold and Kumar (!?), this doesn’t even come close to being your older brother’s TNG. Early reports call it “phenomenal”. So, perhaps handing this tired franchise over to the young Mr. Abrams may have been just what it needed to live long and …

Rated PG-13 for sci-fi action and violence, and brief sexual content.

Director: J.J. Abrams
Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Release Date: 8 May 2009 (USA)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Next Day Air - Movie Review and Synopsis

Next Day Air When a misguided delivery driver inadvertently delivers a package containing concealed bricks of cocaine to the wrong address, it sets in motion a desperate search and battle for the coke between the furious dealer that sent it, the fearful intended recipients that missed it, and the conniving accidental recipients that plan to flip it. Time is running out and everyone’s trying to get their hands on the package that’s been sent…Next Day Air!

Summit Entertainment is flush with cash and cache post-Twilight, and hopefully they’ll maximize their resources to turn this dark comedy, which sounds to me like Pineapple Express cut with Friday, into an early summer hit. The cast, which includes Wood Harris (the former drug kingpin on “The Wire”), is note-perfect, and hopefully the green behind-the-camera talent found a balance between humor and suspense. Word on the street is quiet thus far, though …

Rated R for pervasive language, drug content, some violence and brief sexuality.

Stars: Mos Def, Mike Epps, Donald Faison

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Movie Review and Synopsis

X-Men Origins: Wolverine An origins story that follows the early life of James Howlett (Jackman), also known as Logan, and best known as Wolverine. The chronicle of his younger years as a mutant connects to his relationship and eventual falling out with Victor Creed/Sabretooth (Schreiber), and his fateful entry into the Weapons X project, the governmental program that turns willing and unwilling beings into living weapons.

Media-friendly producer Lauren Shuler Donner was the first person to promise a bleak look into James Howlett’s backstory (call it Dark Knight effect), but when that didn’t gel with initial reports that Fox wants/wanted a more PG-13 take on their first X-Men spin-off, it seemed like everyone involved with the production stepped up to let fans know everything was (mostly) copacetic on set and in the editing suite. Latest reports indicate director Gavin Hood is “90% pleased” with the final results. And what about the rumors of Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool project being in development? I doubt it’s an overstatement, and Reynold’s definitely pushing for it.

Director: Gavin Hood
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds
Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation
Release Date: 1 May 2009 (USA)
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Thriller
