Liverpool share spoils at ten-man Arsenal
Liverpool FC moved two points clear at the top of the Premier League ahead of Chelsea FC’s visit to Everton FC on Monday after a 1-1 draw away to Arsenal FC, who had Emmanuel Adebayor sent off during the second half.
Excellent strikes
Arsène Wenger’s side opened the scoring midway through the first half when Robin van Persie controlled Samir Nasri’s pass, escaped the attentions of Jamie Carragher and rifled a shot inside Pepe Reina’s near post. But events started to favour the Merseysiders when they levelled on 42 minutes through Robbie Keane, who reacted quickest to Daniel Agger’s long ball to flash a shot past Manuel Almunia.
Fàbregas blow
Arsenal then lost Cesc Fàbregas to a knee injury at half-time and their plight deepened when Adebayor was dismissed for a second yellow card after 62 minutes. Liverpool failed to make their numerical advantage count, though, with Nabil El Zhar heading wide their best chance in the final stages. The draw leaves the Gunners fifth, eight points off the pace.
Poor run ended
West Bromwich Albion FC ended a dreadful run of two points from ten games with a 2-1 success against Manchester City FC. The home side broke the deadlock when Luke Moore (69) coolly finished but a vital victory for the bottom club looked to have been wrenched from them when Felipe Caicedo’s 86th-minute effort struck a post and rebounded off goalkeeper Scott Carson and over the line.
Late winners
However, there was time for one more twist as Roman Bednar headed in Gianni Zuiverloon’s cross deep into stoppage time. The win lifts Tony Mowbray’s side to within three points of City and four shy of safety. There was late drama at Newcastle United FC too as they overcame Tottenham Hotspur FC 2-1. Spurs’ Luka Modrić (29) had cancelled out Charles N’Zogbia’s early goal but Damien Duff scored on 90 minutes to lift the hosts up to 12th.
