The present research programme follows a very successful five year collaboration between the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Toshiba Research Europe Ltd. Telecommunications Research Laboratory. The aim of the PhD project is to investigate the theoretical and methodological aspects of distributed estimation and detection in decentralized wireless systems with limited communication and computation resources, and to develop the corresponding efficient and reliable algorithms.
The studentship benefits from excellent financial support (consisting of: maintenance of GBP 15k, GBP 15.5k and GBP 16k in the first, second and third years, tuition and bench fees for the travel fund, IT equipment etc.) provided by our industrial partner Toshiba.
The ideal candidate will have a first or upper second class degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, statistics, operations research or electrical engineering. Given the fundamental character of the research, candidates from any background will require strong mathematical skills. In particular, knowledge of statistics, probability and optimization would be a major advantage, while knowledge of statistical signal processing, communications and control theory would be a bonus. The position is open to applicants from all nations (i.e., no restrictions on citizenship and/or residence).
Closing date: 9th January, 2009.
