Kaplan Scholarships, 2008 Edition features information on programs that offer significant and unrestricted scholarships combined with tips and advice on how to get themClinical Photonics Lab of SAOT at Erlangen-Nuremberg University, Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany

The Clinical Photonics Lab of Erlangen School of Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT) at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany requires highly motivated individuals to work with a team of research scientists, engineers and physicians on the development of new optical methods in biomedical application.

PhD scholarship is provided for 2 years with possible extension. Student meal plan and dormitory accommodation is available. The work language in the lab is English.

Descriptions of the positions:

Code Number: CPL-02-08:
PhD student to be engaged in the fiber sensor for in vivo monitoring of epithelium vessel / capillary density project

The main goal of the project is developing a sensor for monitoring the local blood microcirculation at Critical Care. The sensor will be based on spatially resolved diffuse reflectance measurements. The epithelium vessel/capillary density is an important parameter that may reflect rapidly developing life threatening syndromes like shock or systemic organ failures. This is an international project and may require some trip abroad. Our partners in this project are University Health Network (Toronto, Canada) and Kagoshima University Hospital (Kagoshima, Japan).

Offers a listing of scholarship, internship, and loan programs based on such categories as minority status, field of study, and religious affiliation. The specific tasks in will include:

  • Engineering of fiberoptic spectroscopy setup including LED matrix components
  • Analytical data modelling and Monte-Carlo simulations
  • Performing experimental studies on bio-phantoms
  • Performing experimental studies on animals
  • In addition, there will be opportunities for working on other advanced optical diagnostic instruments and participating in laboratory and clinical studies

Attributes required:

  • Master in physical or engineering sciences with interest in life sciences and with strong capability and interest in instrumentation and measurement techniques including familiarity with signal processing (e.g. Labview) and data processing software (e.g. Matlab)
  • Ability and interest in multicultural team-work
  • Excellent communication skills (English)
  • Willingness to ‘multitask’
  • Interest in working with animal models
  • Ability for trips and temporal remote assignments

Code Number: CPL-04-08:
PhD student to be engaged in the hyperspectral and fluorescence imaging diagnostics and surgical guidance for the surgery of stomach cancer project

(National Research Council) Text is a result of work of two committees of the Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education of the National Research Council. Original volume, c1999, was a product of a 2-year study conducted by the Committee on Developments in the Science of Learning. Expands on the findings, conclusion, and research agenda of the original volume. Softcover. The specific tasks in this period will include:

  • Developing and upgrading a hyperspectral endoscope equipment
  • Operating and upgrading acousto-optical filter and camera setups
  • Carrying out laboratory and clinical research studies including operating optical imaging / spectroscopy equipment, data collection and computer analysis
  • The position may involve experimental animal work and clinical diagnostics, and endosurgical procedures. The job will involve interaction with both academic and clinical personnel
  • In addition, there will be opportunities for working on other advanced optical diagnostic instruments and to participate in laboratory and clinical studies

Attributes required:

  • Master in physical or engineering sciences with interest in life sciences and with strong capability and interest in optics, instrumentation and measurement techniques including familiarity with coding in VB or C family, signal (e.g. Labview) and data processing software scripting (e.g. Matlab)
  • Experience with statistical analysis using SPSS and/or SAS
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to liaise with patients, health care professionals and scientists (English)
  • Willing to travel and present the results on the international conferences worldwide

If you would like to apply for the positions announced, please follow the instruction for the application procedure as given at:
