Why the hell does everything i drink have a logo that says Me-Hi 5¢?

j_o_e_y_l_69 What does that Me-Hi 5¢ mean???

Darren G:
Its the "tax" they put on cans and bottles in those states. For instance in Oregon when you buy a drink you have to pay a 5 cent deposit, in the hopes that you will recycle it when you are done with it. Me and Hi stand for maine and Hawaii!!
Thunda13:
because in Maine and Hawaii you can return them for a 5 cent deposit
Michelle:
You will get 5 cents in Maine and Hawaii to recycle
jakep_gonavy:
It's not a tax. It is a deposit. In the states listed on your can or bottle you pay additional 5 cents when you purchase that soda or drink. Once you consume your drink you can return the empty can or bottle to the store of purchase and get your 5 cents back. It helps ensure that the can or bottle does not end up in a landfilled but that it is recycled.
Michiey:
the letters represent states and the number represents the recycle amount you get when you recycle the can and/or bottle.
jpiepenbrok:
The above 2 are correct. All the states that have a deposit are listed on your can/bottle. Most are 5cents, while MI (Michigan) is 10cents and CA (California) is a cash refund, meaning they pay you by the pound when you return a certain amount to a recycling center.
It is meant to cut down on roadside littering, and works in MI, at least.
