Can superdelegates overturn the primary election results?

bgood26 I heard on the radio (WABC in NY) that the superdelegates can overturn the results of the Democrapic primary, meaning if the people vote for Obama, the party elite could overrule their voice and nominate Hillary.

Please tell me this is NOT true.
And the pols wonder why people don't vote anymore.

Nana:
unfortunately it is true. superdelegates spits in the face of the people and makes a mockery of democracy
Percy:
Not True........

If there is a clear front runner....then the convention becomes easy....and the votes of the superdelegates are probably not enough to make a difference.

However, if it is a very tight race, then their votes will make a difference.
battmann:
It is not overturning. It is correcting because many people voted with one color in their eyes, fingers in their ears and minds into some rock star concept.
The Wiz:
You're mistaken. The SD can influence the outcome in the event that there's a tie or that neither candidate is able to acquire the needed amt of delegates.
Diane B:
Yes, they can technically overturn the results. I went through training on the entire caucus process from the neighborhoods to the national level. But it would be unwise politically for ta super delegate who is in an elected position to overturn the results of their states.
adam63a:
sorry it's true man, when the DNC is held in Colorado this summer cause no one was elected for the Dem party from primaries the popular election results go out the window and then the superdelegates, who are elected mostly, then can vote for whomever they choose. It's quite sad but true, and the by laws state that a candidate can use "any means available" in securing the superdelegates vote. How sad, we'll see how slimy hilary actually is won't we. The consensus right now is that people are outraged at this and the superdelegates are debating over whether to choose who they want or who they're constituents picked in the primaries keep up to date cnn and yahoo are covering this fairly well. Hope I helped.
Amber:
Yes they can but if they do that they will endure hell from fellow Democrats. If they do that the Democratic party will be in shambles. You will have many upset voters. They most likely will go with the popular vote.
italienne:
Superdelegates usually do not have so much clout. This year, because no one has the required delegates to win yet and may not have them by the convention, superdelegates, who can vote their conscience and are not elected, can vote for whomever their conscience dictates.

Yes, it's true.
joe:
God I hope so maybe they are not all caught up in the Obama Mania! They are in politics and know the better candidate who is of substance and that is HILLARY! All you teenagers need to get off this site.
psycmikev:
Not only is it true, but it is a good thing as well. The two parties have been trying to get the support of the super delegates by any means necessary. Obama has "offered" over $600,000 to win votes, Hillary over $150,000. If there is a clear cut leader, they will not overturn the voters, but if it is close, they will go with the one who they feel is best to lead the party to victory. Usually someone tested, with ideas, and ways to get those ideas done. This spells bad news for Obama if he goes in tied.
vtjames7433:
I dont agree with the superdelegate concept but at the same time, they arent overturning anything- if one candidate goes into the convention with a significant lead, they will win, if it is tight, the relative few SD's votes would have an impact though
PrivacyNowPlease!:
It is a possibility. That is why moveon.org has an on line petition asking that the super delegates respect the will of the people with regards to their votes.
Cormack L:
it is true. you see, we live in an oligarchy in which our voice really doesn't count. these delegates in our system aren't even constitutional.. and they will overturn the popular vote once again, because the grease isn't coming from their constituents..

personally i think this entire delegate thing is a nice step toward socialism.
fifty:
The total delegate vote picks the Democratic nominee. You elect delegates through the primary and you elect super delegates through other elections. You elect a governor, senator, representative etc. who all get a vote at the convention.

If a candidate is an overwhelming favorite of the voters, the super delegate vote will have no impact. But if we like both candidates and one has a hundred or so more delegates, the super delegate vote can select the other candidate.

The super delegate vote is added to the delegates selected through the primary to come up with the candidate who will represent the party. The vote is by state and super delegates are each assigned to their states.

You aren't going to see something like the delegates select Obama and then the super delegates select Hillary. What you are going to see is Alabama casts x votes for Obama and y votes for Hillary, Alaska casts z votes for Obama etc.
