Metal-organic frameworks for hydrogen purification and catalytic applications – suitable for chemical engineers, chemists, and physicists

Funding is available for two PhD studentships in the School of Engineering and Electronics, University of Edinburgh on two separate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) related projects. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) constitute one of the most exciting developments in recent nanoporous-materials science, with potential applications in many areas, including catalysis, gas separation and storage. The major advantage of MOFs over more traditional porous materials, such as zeolites, is the greater scope for tailoring these materials for specific applications due to their modular synthesis from corner units (generally metal ions or clusters) and linker units (organic molecules able to bridge the metal corners).

Netherlands (Holland) Flag Polyester 3 ft. x 5 ft.A 4-year position for a PhD student is available in the Auditory Periphery Lab in the Dept. of Neuroscience of the Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The student will record from single auditory nerve fibers of Mongolian gerbils and, in a later stage, of the Leopard frog. The setup for neural recordings from the gerbil is operational. Recordings from the frog will be performed at UCLA, California during a 4-month collaboration project with Dr. P. Narins.

Applicants should have an M.Sc. in Biology, Medicine, Biophysics, or equivalent, with a demonstrable interest in Neuroscience research. Affinity with quantitative techniques is required. Experience with electrophysiological techniques is preferred.

More details of the project can be found on our lab page http://beta.neuro.nl/research/vanderheijden/.
More information on the Dept of Neuroscience can be found at http://www.neuro.nl/.

Mail your application including a CV and the names of one or two references to Dr. Marcel van der Heijden, m.vanderheyden[at]erasmusmc.nl

PhD scholarships – Nanophotonics for Terabit Communications (NATEC)

Probabilistic Similarity Networks (ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award)A new research centre focusing on nanophotonics for terabit communications is being established at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The centre is based on donations from a private foundation, VILLUM KANN RASNMUSSEN FONDEN. The NATEC centre will, in particular, perform research on light-matter interaction in semiconductor quantum dots and photonic crystal structures and explore the use of such nanostructured materials for realizing photonic chips operating in the terabit regime. The centre is a strongly focused effort involving nanofabrication, experimental characterisation based on nanoscopy and ultrafast lasers, fundamental theory including topology optimization, and systems experiments and will provide ample opportunities for cross-fertilization between these areas.

The NATEC Centre is headed by Professor Jesper Mørk (jm[ at ]com.dtu.dk) from Department of Photonics Engineering, DTU, and involves the collaboration with 4 other institutes at DTU: Department of Micro-and Nanotechnology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Center for Electron Nanoscopy and Danchip.

Doctoral Fellowship in Distributed Generation Technology, University of Agder, Norway

Writing the Doctoral DissertationDoctoral Fellowship in Distributed Generation Technology at the University of Agder, Norway, Faculty of Engineering and Science

Ref. 86/08

A doctoral fellowship in distributed generation technology is available at the University of Agder. The University wishes to fill this vacancy as soon as possible. The post is in the Faculty of Engineering and Science which is located in Grimstad, Norway.

The energy utility Agder Energi finances the post as part of a strategic strengthening of the cooperation with the University of Agder, and as part of a strengthening of the group that works in the field of distributed generation at the University.

The doctoral fellow will work on the project “Distributed Generation for Mobile Communication Systems”. The focus in the project is on technologies for secure power supply to base or repeater stations, where photovoltaic generators provide the basic power needed. There may also be a presence of a power grid, but in this case, the power grid is there primarily for backup and/or for providing power to possible AC-consumers in the station, as well as sinking any surplus power from the photovoltaic generators. The prospective candidate must write a one- to two-page research proposal on this topic as part of the application. The proposal may focus on the system aspects of the power distribution, including energy storage, or on details of the necessary power electronics interface for the photovoltaic generators, such as its topology and/or (digital) control. The quality and relevance of the research proposal will form part of the evaluation of prospective candidates.
