Outrage Kirby Dick focuses his camera on closeted politicians who lobby for anti-gay legislation in the U.S.

Linking you all to Out’s interview with Kirby Dick feels appropriate since, once upon a time — before the aforementioned mag looked and smelled like the men’s department at Barney’s, it used to engage in the practice of publishing the names of closeted men and women of influence. Consider rallying your friends and allies, think about how rad it would be if Act Up and the Mattachine Society were still active, and realize there are handfuls of people like former U.S. Senator Larry Craig who live horrible lives and actively oppress people of their own kind around the world.

Director: Kirby Dick
Stars: Barney Frank

X-Men Origins: Wolverine An origins story that follows the early life of James Howlett (Jackman), also known as Logan, and best known as Wolverine. The chronicle of his younger years as a mutant connects to his relationship and eventual falling out with Victor Creed/Sabretooth (Schreiber), and his fateful entry into the Weapons X project, the governmental program that turns willing and unwilling beings into living weapons.

Media-friendly producer Lauren Shuler Donner was the first person to promise a bleak look into James Howlett’s backstory (call it Dark Knight effect), but when that didn’t gel with initial reports that Fox wants/wanted a more PG-13 take on their first X-Men spin-off, it seemed like everyone involved with the production stepped up to let fans know everything was (mostly) copacetic on set and in the editing suite. Latest reports indicate director Gavin Hood is “90% pleased” with the final results. And what about the rumors of Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool project being in development? I doubt it’s an overstatement, and Reynold’s definitely pushing for it.

Director: Gavin Hood
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds
Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation
Release Date: 1 May 2009 (USA)
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past A bachelor is haunted by the ghosts of his past girlfriends at his younger brother’s wedding.

You might remember this one from circa 2003, when a post-Gigli Ben Affleck backed away from starring in another romantic comedy. So, yeah, I guess it’s somewhat ironic that Jennifer Garner wound up cast in the project years later, and I have to imagine (without digging up a copy of the script) that her character, the sister of the bride, winds up domesticating the wild McConaughey here. That’s what has to happen according to the genre’s rules, right? But I feel like that is going against what makes McConaughey sexy: we want him untamed, roaming, and only capable of lust. Cross my heart and hope that Mark Waters (who here reunites with one-time mean girl Lacey Chabert!) has a way to keep his star’s desirable qualities intact.

Rated PG-13 for sexual content throughout, some language and a drug reference.

Director: Mark Waters
Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Emma Stone
Studio: New Line Cinema
Release Date: 1 May 2009 (USA)
Genre: Comedy, Romance

Battle for Terra - Movie Review and Synopsis

Battle for Terra Mala (Evan Rachel Wood) is a precocious girl living on the beautiful planet Terra, a place where peace and tolerance are celebrated. Unbeknownst to Mala and her fellow Terrians, the last inhabitants of Earth have exhausted the resources of their planet and those of three others, and are now searching for a new home. This Earthforce has discovered that the use of a Terraformer will make Terra habitable for humans but poisonous for Terrians. When the Earthlings embark on a hostile invasion of Terra, Mala’s father, Roven (Dennis Quaid), is kidnapped. Hoping to save her father, Mala captures and hides a crashed human pilot named Jim (Luke Wilson). While Mala nurses Jim back to health, the two forge a friendship and a plan that could save both the human race and the planet of Terra. Soon, however, they realize that peace will not be secured unless they can combat both the Terraformer and dark political forces that will stop at nothing in their drive to achieve power for power’s sake.

While Terra’s message that peace is a question of free will and choice is a potent one, the exuberance of Mala and her young friends carries the film. Director Aristomenis Tsirbas paints a landscape of pastoral pleasure, and our admiration for Terra’s idyllic vistas is only heightened when they are invaded.

This debut animated feature from Canadian production company Snoot Entertainment might turn a few heads amongst the executive ranks at Pixar and DreamWorks. Since its debut at the Toronto Film Festival in 2007, Terra (the movie’s original title) has earned awards and positive reviews alike, with many people responded to the project’s obvious environmental themes, as well as the creation of a utopian world where freethinkers (cue the voices of Evan Rachel Wood and Justin Long) are outcasts. And then humans come along to make matters worse. I’m in. Here’s a blog with a trailer and other behind-the-scenes bits.

Rated PG for sequences of sci-fi action violence and some thematic elements.

Director: Aristomenis Tsirbas
Stars: Evan Rachel Wood, Luke Wilson, Justin Long
Studio: Lionsgate
Release Date: 1 May 2009 (USA)
Genre: Animation, Adventure

The Informers - Movie Review and Synopsis

The Informers A multi-strand narrative set in early 1980’s Los Angeles, centered on an array of characters who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman, an amoral ex-con). Connecting the intertwining strands are a group of beautiful, blonde young men and women who sleep all day and party all night, doing drugs — and one another –with abandon, never realizing that they are dancing on the edge of a volcano.

The rage for all things 1980s ends here, since Gregor Jordan’s adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel was all but disowned by the Sundance set after its premiere back in January. The idea of a nearly always nude Amber Heard should not conjure up notions of it’s-so-bad-it’s-Showgirls-good here. Seriously, just move away and move on from this one.

Rated R for strong sexual content, nudity, drug use, pervasive language and some disturbing images.

Director: Gregor Jordan
Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Mickey Rourke
Studio: Senator Distribution
Release Date: 1 May 2009 (Iceland)
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
